Two named 2007 Sonja Hillgren Fellows

Katie Allen Kate Hill

Katie Allen, far left, a senior Agricultural Journalism major, and Kate Hill, a master's student at the Missouri School of Journalism, traveled to Washington in December to cover the 11th annual Farm Journal Forum.

The two students were selected in November as the 2007 Sonja Hillgren Fellows, enabling them to attend the Dec. 10-11 meeting and tour offices of policy leaders.

The forum brings together farmers, agribusiness executives, legislators, lobbyists, government officials and others. They discuss agriculture, energy, global trade, technology, the environment and politics.

As part of their fellowship activities, Allen and Hill covered the forum for www.agweb.com, taking photos, writing stories and blog items, and interviewing newsmakers.

The forum was founded by MU Alumna Sonja Hillgren, who died in December 2006 after serving for decades as the nation's premier farm writer. She covered farm policy for Farm Journal, United Press International and Knight-Ridder Newspapers.

Gifts in Hillgren's memory by Farm Journal and other contributors have made the Sonja Hillgren Fellowship possible. The Fellows are selected by the MU Agricultural Journalism Program and the editors of Farm Journal.
